How Riversong Began

For more than 24 years, horses shaped Chris and Lucinda's lives in Central Oregon. During that time, we owned a boarding and training facility in Tumalo called BentWire Ranch. Through the years we had people pass away, get very ill, age out or experience financial loss. Because of this, 11 of the BWR boarder horses were left with nowhere to go when we moved to Prineville. Many of them had already been with us for most of their lives. We were faced with Westy, Boo, Diego, Pepper, Dancer, Little Red, Mama Tank, Foxy, Lady and Skeeter were deeply loved with nowhere to go.

Many of the horses had spent their lives as riding partners, show horses, trail companions, and confidence builders. It seemed wrong to put them down. They were not sick or injured, just elderly.

This is why Riversong exists 

Our mission is to honor the lifelong bond between horses and humans through sanctuary, stewardship, education, and healing. Through nature-based learning, science- and evidence-based horsemanship, artistic expression, and future equine-assisted therapy programs, Riversong offers new possibilities for both horses and people.

 

Our Horses are still teachers

Riversong is more than a safe place for horses to grow old. Our sanctuary horses are valued members of the herd and essential members of our education team.

Each horse brings a unique personality, history, and way of communicating.

 

Through our Being Herd & Seen™ programs, participants explore equine behavior, the horse’s brain and nervous system, how horses learn, Horse Speak® communication, and evidence-based horsemanship.

 

Riversong Horse Retreats

But their purpose has not ended.

They now live in a herd with room to move through the juniper and sagebrush. Every day, they continue to teach us about trust, resilience, patience, and the quiet intelligence of horses.

 

How You Can Help

Today, 12 sanctuary horses depend on Riversong for lifelong care.

Donations help provide hay, veterinary and dental care, hoof trimming, medications, shelter, and the daily support each horse needs to live with comfort and dignity. Contributions also support our education center and future scholarship opportunities.

 

Our 2026 fundraising goal is $12,000. Every gift, large or small, makes a meaningful difference.
